ADD Inc's transformation of a strategically important but underutilized industrial site created a landmark mixed use development at the City's front door. The planning and architecture of the Brighton Landing campus respond to a range of external and internal influences, including the Massachusetts Turnpike on one side and the small brownstone scale of the Brighton neighborhood on the other. The plan composes two distinct but compatible building solutions rather than one to create a south facing urban plaza while still responding to the strong curve and speed of the adjacent highway on the north. The ten story East Building, also New Balance Athletic Shoe's World Headquarters, is designed with white precast and punched windows with a sleek and slender curtainwall facade that responds to the highway. The West Building steps down in height toward the adjacent community and employs a more restrained and horizontal solution of warmer precast to enrich the two-building composition. The landmark design has spurred further development in this important community at the City's western edge.
